An Old Woodstove

by Danny P. Barbare

I’m splitting the logs on the old
Oak stump to kindle the
Fire. Just enough
To keep me warm. The axe
Is sharp. One swing I’ll take
And quarter a half in two.
And split another just for
Good measure, and stack
It by the door,
So the axe can
Rest, and I sleep, to
The crackling pop of the coals.
